HyperRealistic Animal fur Tutorial

Step 2

Ok. First things first. Colour the base colours you want to use onto your animal. I am doing a calico cat. so she is mainly whites and browns. Then add darker areas where you see fit and using the smudge tool (pointing hand in your toolbox) at 50% smudge all your areas. as shown in the image. Note to actualy look at photo reference so you know where you animals fur lies. If you dont use reference it can look odd. Most animal fur goes downwards. In the cats case. Head fur goes upwards around the face and slopes down around the cheeks.

Step 3

Using your brush tool. Take a dark colour (not TOO dark. Just a shade or two. As im colouring white fur. I have gone for a medium Grey. start where the layers are going to be at the bottom. so the fur will look like it is laying naturally ontop of each other. In this case i am doing the foot first. and working up to the Thigh.

Step 4

Remember to work out how short your fur is supposed to be. My cat has very short leg fur so i am doing short movements with my Brush. dont make the fur go in straight rows (unless your animal is well groomed) this wont look natural. so make the end fur go off in different directions slightly. making a scruffy look.

Step 5

Now selecting a lighter colour go over your darker fur. Dont make it as close as your darker fur. Make it more seperate so you can still see the dark fur underneath As shown.

Step 6

Get a even lighter colour and go over that layer. Once again use even less strokes. so it is gradually building into layers. Make sure you know where your light is coming from. Only do your strokes in that direction. as shown

Step 7

Lasty getting your lightest colour add to the area where the light will be hitting. Make the brush about half the size so your light fur is finer. giving your fur a whispy look.

And there you have it! Use this tecnique throughout your image. Remember that it does take practice so dont give up after your first attempt!
